Apples from Europe – high quality apples

What factors determine the popularity of European apples in Egypt and Jordan?i?

European apples continue to be a popular item in Egyptian and Jordanian markets. This trend is influenced by several factors, such as fruit quality, availability, and price.

Egyptian consumer purchasing habits have exhibited a new trend over the past several years. Their propensity to select premium products, which include imported fruits, with a particular emphasis on apples from European Union member states, is substantially greater. Egyptians appreciate the high quality and taste. The heightened focus on sustainable production practices significantly impacts the industry. The European Union’s integrated fruit production system, which limits synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and prioritises natural alternatives, plays a crucial role in ensuring the high quality and safety of European apples. Despite a nascent appreciation for the diversity of European apples, prevailing market preferences in those areas favour intensely red-skinned varieties such as Red Jonaprince, Red Delicious and Gala (both striped and blushed varieties). The European Union produces these apples in substantial quantities.

Egypt imports a significant quantity of apples from the European Union. In the 2023/2024 trade season, 87,200 tonnes of EU apples were shipped to the Egyptian market. While this amount is notably lower than the previous season (2022/2023), Egypt remains one of the primary buyers of European apples. Approximately half of these exports, totalling 45,700 tonnes, originated from Polish orchards, which account for over 60% of Egypt’s apple imports. Additionally, 20,700 tonnes were shipped from Italy, and 20,100 tonnes came from Greece.

Jordan consumes approximately 40,000 tonnes of apples annually, with nearly half of this quantity sourced from European orchards. Jordanians highly value European apples for their freshness and taste, making them a popular choice among local consumers. During the 2023/2024 trade season, 21,800 tonnes of apples from the European Union were imported into the Jordanian market. Of this total, nearly 13 thousand tonnes were shipped from Poland, 6,200 tonnes from Italy, and 2,000 tonnes from Greece.

Jakość i dostępność jabłek

European apples are highly valued in Egyptian and Jordanian markets for their exceptional quality. This quality is attributed to stringent production methods and the high standards upheld during storage and transportation. As part of promoting these attributes, various campaigns have been launched to raise consumer awareness about European apples’ nutritional and quality benefits. One such initiative is the “Time for Apples from Europe” campaign, which has been ongoing since 2022 in Egypt and Jordan. This campaign has also educated consumers about the availability of numerous apple varieties throughout the year.

Price competition

Trade agreements between the European Union and Middle Eastern countries, such as the free trade agreement with Egypt, enable duty-free shipping for selected goods, including apples. This arrangement makes apples competitively priced, helping them establish a foothold in these markets as an appealing alternative for fruits from this climate zone.
