Market Update: Apple Exports to India
This season, apple exports from Europe to India are playing a key role in maintaining supply balance in the local market. As one of the largest apple importers in the world, India has experienced a supply gap in 2024 due to limited domestic production, which has significantly increased the demand for imported apples.
In recent months, Polish apples have entered the Indian market in substantial volumes, initially helping to offset the shortfall. However, due to a surge in imports at the beginning of the season, the market was temporarily saturated with apples from Europe, Turkey, and Iran. As a result, import activity slowed down as Indian importers focused on selling existing stock before placing new orders.
Although the prices of imported apples are higher than in previous years—mainly due to rising production and transportation costs—demand for European apples remains stable. High-quality apples from Europe, particularly from Poland, are growing in popularity, and their brand recognition is steadily increasing among Indian consumers.
According to data from the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development up to July 2024, India continues to be one of the top importers of Polish apples. With nearly 25,000 tonnes delivered to the Indian market, the country ranks among the top six trading partners for Polish apple producers.
The second half of the year also shows positive signs for this market. In October, Egypt was the largest importer of Polish apples, receiving 5,678 tonnes. Libya followed with 2,394 tonnes, while India secured third place, importing 2,319 tonnes of apples.
